Shubman Gill will lead North Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2025, just weeks after a brilliant England tour.
Scoring 754 runs in five Tests, Gill became India’s second-highest run-scorer in a single Test series.
Sunil Gavaskar praised Gill’s return to domestic cricket, calling it a strong signal to other India players.
Gavaskar said Gill’s participation boosts the value of the Duleep Trophy and supports India’s first-class structure.
He applauded the BCCI decision to skip a white-ball series against Sri Lanka and prioritize domestic tournaments.
“Gill captaining North Zone is a massive shot in the arm for the tournament,” Gavaskar wrote in Sportstar.
“He could have rested, but chose to stay engaged. That sends the right message to his teammates.”
Gill will lead a well-balanced North Zone squad featuring emerging stars and Ranji Trophy standouts.
Players like Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Ayush Badoni strengthen the team’s depth and versatility.
Jammu and Kashmir have the most players, including Shubham Khajuria and top pacer Auqib Nabi.
The Duleep Trophy 2025 begins August 28 in Bengaluru, kicking off the 2025–26 Indian domestic season.
Gill’s leadership signals a new era for Indian cricket, rooted in domestic excellence and Test match focus.
