Sanju Samson has once again found himself at the center of a major selection debate in Indian cricket. Ahead of the Asia Cup squad announcement in Mumbai, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter is facing uncertainty over his role. Despite scoring three centuries in his last 12 T20Is as an opener, the rise of Shubman Gill’s form has reignited discussions about who should be India’s preferred choice at the top.
Aakash Chopra Warns Against Samson’s Exclusion
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra shared his thoughts on the situation through his YouTube channel. He stressed that if Gill is added as a third opener, it creates a difficult question for the selectors. While Abhishek Sharma is unlikely to be dropped, the inclusion of Gill may force Samson either into a middle-order role or even out of the squad altogether.
Chopra warned that this would not be the right move, stating Samson has never been seen as a No. 5 batter. He argued that India’s investment in Samson as an opener would seem wasted if he is sidelined. With Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma already cemented in the middle order, Samson’s position becomes even more complicated.
Gill’s Role in India’s T20I Setup Questioned
Chopra also questioned whether Shubman Gill fits into India’s aggressive batting style in T20 cricket. He pointed out that while Yashasvi Jaiswal naturally suits that template, Gill’s ability to slot into a destructive batting lineup remains doubtful.
This dilemma has left the selectors with a tough choice — whether to continue backing Samson as an opener or to hand Gill an opportunity that might change the balance of the squad. With the Asia Cup and the World Cup approaching, the decision could have long-term implications for India’s batting plans.
