Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Jasprit Bumrah will play fewer Test matches in the future, but he warned against pushing the star pacer into early retirement. Following the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, Bumrah faced criticism for playing only three of the five Tests. The 31-year-old featured in the first, third, and fourth matches, claiming 17 wickets, while India won both Tests in which he did not play.
Chopra emphasized that Bumrah is a rare talent, calling him a “Kohinoor diamond” and urging the team management to let him choose the matches he plays. He highlighted that while Bumrah may not appear in every Test, his presence in selected games adds immense value to the team.
Rotating Bowlers Can Maintain Balance
Chopra also suggested that rotating bowlers is a practical approach in Test cricket. Unlike batters, whose absence may disrupt continuity, Bumrah’s selective participation allows the team flexibility in managing workloads. Mohammed Siraj, for instance, bowled nearly 186 overs in the series against England, taking 23 wickets, which Chopra cited as an example of successful bowler rotation.
Reports indicate that Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed availability for the upcoming Asia Cup, which starts on September 9. The All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee will announce the squad on August 19 in Mumbai.
