Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has strongly backed Shubman Gill for India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, insisting the selectors cannot undermine his talent in T20Is.
Gill’s quality as a top-order batter is already established in ODIs and Tests, but his T20 credentials also remain impressive. He was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad as a reserve, later captained India in Zimbabwe, and served as vice-captain against Sri Lanka.
Gill’s T20I Record and IPL Dominance
In 21 T20 Internationals, Gill has scored 578 runs at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27. His record includes one century and three fifties.
The right-hander’s IPL 2025 performance further strengthened his case, where he smashed 650 runs in 15 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87. He also registered six fifties, underlining his ability to anchor and accelerate.
Harbhajan’s Verdict on Gill’s Role
Harbhajan explained why Gill’s technique is vital in T20 cricket. “Yes, India has players like Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma, but you cannot undermine Shubman Gill. He is an all-format player who can adapt and even dominate T20Is. It’s not always about hitting every ball for sixes; you need batters who can build long innings and rescue the team,” he told
The veteran added that Gill can attack when needed, matching anyone in power-hitting. “He has worn the Orange Cap in the IPL, and that does not happen by chance,” Harbhajan noted.
Shubman Gill, with centuries across all formats, stands as one of India’s most versatile batters. With Asia Cup 2025 around the corner, the debate now centers on whether the selectors will include him in the squad.
