Indian cricket stands at a turning point as Rohit Sharma approaches the final phase of his ODI career. At 38, Rohit has already retired from Test and T20I formats but continues to lead the one-day side. With another World Cup cycle on the horizon, BCCI faces the crucial decision of choosing India’s next ODI captain. Two names dominate the discussion — Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.
Shreyas Iyer’s Growing Captaincy Reputation
Shreyas Iyer has significantly boosted his reputation as a leader in recent years. Guiding two different franchises to consecutive IPL finals, he has showcased strong tactical awareness and composure under pressure. His leadership record, coupled with his batting consistency in ODI cricket, makes him a serious candidate to take over once Rohit Sharma steps aside.
However, speculation around Iyer being the frontrunner was dismissed by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who told Hindustan Times:
“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions.”
While this statement cooled rumours, Iyer’s credentials remain strong. Supporters argue that his IPL captaincy experience and international performances should not be overlooked when considering India’s next ODI captain.
Shubman Gill Backed as Natural Successor
Shubman Gill, however, seems to be the board’s preferred option. At just 25, Gill already averages 59 in ODIs, serves as vice-captain, and recently took over as India’s Test captain. His age, form, and leadership potential make him an attractive long-term choice for BCCI.
A source within the board was clear in backing Gill, stating:
“He averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket, when the time comes.”
Gill’s early exposure to captaincy in the IPL and a strong showing in his first Test series as skipper have further strengthened his case.
Rohit Sharma Still in Charge
Despite the rising debate, Rohit Sharma remains India’s ODI captain and will lead the team in the three-match series against Australia this October. While the official transition may not happen immediately, the contest between Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer has already set the stage for India’s leadership future.
