Shahid Afridi has once again sparked controversy with his infamous “rotten egg” remark just before the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 clash. The former Pakistan captain revisited the World Championship of Legends row, where India had pulled out of matches against Pakistan twice, reigniting heated debates between fans on both sides.
“I have always said that cricket should go on; it has always helped in making the relations better between the two countries. In England, people had bought tickets to see the WCL match, and the players had practised. Then you didn’t play. What was the thinking? I just can’t understand,” Afridi said on Samaa TV.
Afridi’s ‘Rotten Egg’ Comment Resurfaces
Afridi brought up his old statement, once directed at a former India opener, believed by many to be Shikhar Dhawan, who opted out of playing against Pakistan during tense diplomatic times. He claimed that the player’s captain, Yuvraj Singh, had advised him not to post anything online but permitted him to skip the game.
“Agar mai naam lunga na iss waqt, toh wo beechare phass jayenge (If I name the players, then they will be dragged into a controversy). The player I referred to as a bad egg, his captain also told him, ‘If you don’t want to play, then don’t play. Just don’t tweet on social media.’ But that said, the player had come with an ulterior motive. That is why he was a bad egg,” Afridi added.
His remarks have reignited speculation and criticism, with many interpreting the dig as aimed at former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan.
Afridi’s Dig at Indian Cricketers in Commentary
Afridi also launched another indirect jab at ex-Indian cricketers who were part of the India Champions squad, stating that some are “still trying to prove they are Indian.”
“Now they are doing commentary in the Asia Cup,” he remarked, clearly hinting at players turned commentators covering the 2025 tournament.
With such statements surfacing just days before the high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash, Afridi has once again ensured that the cricketing rivalry grabs headlines beyond the cricket field.
