India captain Shubman Gill is facing renewed criticism after a disappointing performance in the third Test against England at Lord’s. After scoring big at Edgbaston, including a double century and a century in the same match, expectations were high. But at Lord’s, Gill was dismissed for just 16 in the first innings and then fell LBW for 6 while chasing 193.
Gill also let emotions get the better of him late on Day 4 when England batter Zak Crawley delayed play before stumps. Clearly frustrated, Gill got into a heated verbal exchange with Crawley. This outburst seemed to fuel England’s aggression even more, and when Gill returned to bat, English players gave it right back to him on the field.
Australia women’s team captain Alyssa Healy reacted to the episode, saying England’s tactics had clearly worked. “If teams go hard at Gill, it can rattle him. If England saw that crack, they did well to exploit it,” Healy said on the Willow Talk Podcast. She added that it’s common for teams to target the opposition captain to break their rhythm and apply pressure.
Changes Expected for India, Dawson Returns for England
India are now trailing 2-1 in the five-match series and are expected to make changes to their playing XI for the fourth Test in Manchester. Some underperforming players may be dropped in hopes of improving the team’s balance and performance.
Meanwhile, England have named Liam Dawson as a replacement for Shoaib Bashir, who has been ruled out due to injury. Dawson, who last played a Test eight years ago, could make a surprise return at Old Trafford.
With tension high and the series on the line, both teams are looking to adjust strategies and stay mentally strong. As for Gill, all eyes will be on how he responds — both with the bat and his temperament — in the crucial fourth Test.
