South Africa‘s men’s cricket team may be forced to shorten their upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies. Originally scheduled to run from January 27 to February 6, the series conflicts with the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is set to begin on February 7. As a result, South Africa may need to adjust their schedule to ensure both teams are able to prepare for the tournament on time.
The T20I series against the West Indies is South Africa’s only home series this summer. However, with the World Cup starting just days after the series was originally planned to conclude, South Africa’s cricket board (CSA) is in discussions with Cricket West Indies to determine the best course of action.
T20I Series Changes to Accommodate World Cup Preparations
The ICC has moved up the start date for its support period, which now begins on January 31, a few days earlier than initially planned. This change leaves CSA with limited options for accommodating the West Indies’ schedule without overlapping with the World Cup preparations.
The support period is when teams are expected to arrive at the host country, and warm-up games are optional. However, if West Indies decides to skip warm-up matches, South Africa still needs to cut two of the planned five T20Is due to the tight window between the SA20 league and the World Cup.
Despite this challenge, CSA is working on re-arranging the series and determining which venues to use for the matches. As of now, venues like Paarl, Newlands, Buffalo Park in East London, Centurion, and Johannesburg are being considered.
