Ashwin Surprises Fans by Going Unsold

Ravichandran Ashwin stunned cricket fans as he went unsold in the UAE-based ILT20 auction on Wednesday. The veteran spinner had registered for a base price of USD 120,000, making him the only player in the auction with a six-figure base. Ashwin had recently retired from international cricket and the IPL, but was reportedly considering participation in multiple overseas leagues, including the ILT20.

Despite being available in the accelerated auction, Ashwin did not attract any bids. Analysts and fans were left surprised, as many expected teams to compete for his services given his experience and skill in T20 cricket.

Pull-Out Twist and BBL Commitment

A new twist emerged after speculation suggested that Ashwin may have voluntarily pulled out of the ILT20 auction. Cricket analyst Simon Doull commented, “It’s a massive surprise. Teams with over $400,000 in their purse could have gone for him. If he pulled out, he hasn’t read the room.”

The overlap with Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), which runs from December 14 to January 25, is believed to have influenced his decision. Ashwin has already signed with the Sydney Thunder for the BBL season, and participating in both leagues simultaneously would have been challenging due to travel, scheduling, and physical strain. This decision may allow him to focus fully on the BBL while avoiding overcommitment.
