Manoj Tiwary Criticizes BCCI Over Asia Cup 2024 Schedule

The decision to schedule the India vs Pakistan clash in the upcoming Asia Cup 2024 has stirred political and public backlash. The match, set for September 14 in the UAE, comes amidst rising tensions between the two nations following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year and India’s military response, Operation Sindoor.

Former Indian cricketer and current West Bengal minister Manoj Tiwary has openly criticized the move. He stated that playing against Pakistan in such a tense political climate is inappropriate and disrespectful to those affected by terrorism.

‘India vs Pakistan Should Not Happen’

Speaking to ANI, Tiwary expressed strong disapproval of the cricket match, questioning how such an event could be justified given the national sentiment.

“I am against it. The India-Pakistan match should not be held. Especially after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which civilians were killed. Our Prime Minister has said that Operation Sindoor is still ongoing… how can we play a match with Pakistan?” Tiwary questioned.

His comments echo recent protests that led to the cancellation of a legends match between India and Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends. Indian players such as Harbhajan Singh and the Pathan brothers refused to play, citing patriotic reasons and public pressure.

Olympic Bid May Influence BCCI’s Stand

Despite the controversy, sources suggest that the BCCI’s decision to proceed with the Asia Cup could be tied to India’s ambitions of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. Staying aligned with the Olympic Charter, which encourages peaceful relations through sport, may be influencing the board’s current stance.

As things stand, the Asia Cup 2024 is scheduled to begin on September 9, with uncertainty still looming over the marquee India-Pakistan tie. Whether national sentiment or international diplomacy wins out remains to be seen.
