Shubman Gill’s early dismissal on Day 1 of the final Test between India and England at The Oval triggered disappointment among fans and sharp criticism from former players. Gill, who has been in sensational form throughout the series, fell victim to a reckless run-out after misjudging a single.
It happened in the 28th over when Gill, on 21, pushed the ball and called for a run that didn’t exist. Midway through, he hesitated, giving Gus Atkinson enough time to field and deliver a direct hit. The dismissal felt like a turning point in India’s innings, especially as they were already under pressure.
Despite the nature of the dismissal, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate offered words of support for the 25-year-old opener. Speaking after the day’s play, Doeschate admitted it was a misjudgment but emphasized that Gill’s recent performances more than make up for the mistake.
Coach Backs Gill Despite Harsh Reactions
“I’m assuming not as frustrating as it is for him. He’s in the touch of his life,” said Doeschate. “He made batting look really easy today while he was out there. These things happen.”
The coach hinted that the run-out was a result of intent to keep the scoreboard ticking rather than sheer carelessness. He explained that strike rotation is an important strategy, and Gill might have simply miscalculated in that moment.
“Trying to keep the pressure on the bowlers and fielders is important. That was just a misjudgment of a run,” added Doeschate. “Given what he’s done in the first four Tests, we’ll let him get away with that one.”
India ended the day at 204/6, with Karun Nair’s unbeaten 52 helping steady the ship. While Gill couldn’t add much to his 737-run tally in the series, his average of 92.12 remains a highlight. Although he missed a chance to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 774-run record, his contributions have already left a lasting mark on this historic series.
