West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has officially announced his retirement from international cricket. The 37-year-old will play his final matches in West Indies colors during the upcoming T20I series against Australia, marking the end of an impactful international career.
Russell will feature in the first two T20Is on July 20 and 22 at Sabina Park, Jamaica—his home ground. His selection, according to Cricket West Indies, was based purely on performance merit, with the board acknowledging him as one of the most impactful T20 players globally.
Reflecting on his journey, Russell said representing West Indies was one of the proudest achievements of his life. “As a kid, I never thought I’d get to this level, but over time, I realized what was possible. I always wanted to leave a mark wearing the maroon and inspire others,” he shared.
An Iconic Career Comes to a Close
Andre Russell, a two-time T20 World Cup winner (2012 and 2016), has played 84 T20Is for West Indies since his debut in 2011. He was primarily a T20 specialist after 2019 and also represented the Caribbean side in 56 ODIs and one Test match. His powerful hitting, death-over bowling, and electric fielding made him a fan favorite and a major asset in the shortest format.
Russell’s final game in front of his home crowd will be an emotional farewell. “I love playing for West Indies, especially in front of my family and friends. Ending my career at home is a special moment, and I hope to inspire the next generation,” he said.
His retirement comes just two months after Nicholas Pooran stepped away from international duties, signaling another significant loss for West Indies cricket ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Matthew Forde will replace Russell for the remaining matches of the series after the Sabina Park leg. As fans prepare to bid farewell to a Caribbean powerhouse, Russell’s contribution to West Indies cricket will be remembered for years to come.
