Ashwin Backs Shubman Gill’s Bold New Ball Choice

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has defended Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s bold decision to hand the new ball to debutant Anshul Kamboj during the fourth Test against England in Manchester. While many questioned the call—especially with experienced pacer Mohammed Siraj in the lineup—Ashwin explained that there was a sound tactical reason behind the move.

Kamboj, who replaced Akash Deep in the playing XI, had a challenging start. England opener Ben Duckett attacked him early, hitting three boundaries in the first over. But the young Haryana pacer regained his composure and eventually took the crucial wicket of Duckett for 94, ending with figures of 1/48 in 10 overs.

Ashwin, on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, said the decision was “highly debatable” but logical. “Kamboj has a good wrist position and can swing it both ways. Siraj is excellent with the old ball, so I understand the strategy,” Ashwin said.

Debutant Kamboj Shows Promise on Day 2

Ashwin praised Kamboj for his composure and ability to bounce back. “It’s not easy to bowl alongside Bumrah on debut, especially against Bazball,” he said. “His first spell was tough, but he came back nicely. If the conditions support, I wouldn’t be surprised if he grabs more wickets on Day 3.”

Kamboj had been a part of the India A squad earlier and was not originally picked for this Test series. But after impressing in unofficial Tests, he got a late call-up and a surprise debut. Gill’s decision to give him the new ball over Siraj sparked debate, but Kamboj’s late success may prove it was the right call.

As the Test heads into Day 3, England are strongly placed at 225/2, trailing India’s first innings total of 358 by 133 runs. With Joe Root and Ollie Pope at the crease, the Indian bowling attack—led by Bumrah and supported by a confident Kamboj—will look to make early breakthroughs.
