Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has clarified his remarks on Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis after his earlier comments sparked controversy. The issue began when Ashwin pointed out that Brevis was signed for INR 2.20 crore despite having a base price of INR 75 lakh in the mega auction. Brevis went unsold at the auction but was later brought in as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh during IPL 2025.
CSK soon released an official statement confirming that all rules were followed, with Brevis being signed at the same price as Gurjapneet, who was ruled out due to injury.
Ashwin Explains His Remarks
Addressing the matter on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, Ashwin said his comments were misunderstood and blown out of proportion. He clarified that he never suggested any wrongdoing and was only explaining the situation.
“In today’s world, news can be made from a single headline. My intent was to talk about Brevis’ batting, not his signing amount,” Ashwin explained. He also highlighted how injury replacements are common in the IPL and every player’s signing is ratified under strict rules.
Praise for Brevis’ Batting Form
Ashwin went on to applaud Brevis’ performances, calling him a power-hitter and a player in the form of his life. The 22-year-old recently scored his maiden T20I century against Australia and followed it up with a half-century in the next match.
“The way Brevis is batting, CSK has struck gold. He has been batting really well, hitting monstrous sixes, and is a special talent,” Ashwin said.
The spinner concluded by saying that CSK issued a clarification only because fans had doubts, reiterating that there was no error from the franchise, the player, or the governing body.
