Asia Cup 2025 Scenarios: PCB Boycott Threat Leaves Pakistan Facing Elimination

Asia Cup 2025 Scenarios: PCB Boycott Threat Leaves Pakistan Facing Elimination

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has threatened to withdraw from their upcoming Asia Cup 2025 Group A match against the United Arab Emirates. The demand follows the post-match controversy where India refused to shake hands with Pakistan after their win on Sunday. The PCB insists that the International Cricket Council (ICC) must remove referee Andy Pycroft before Pakistan’s next fixture.

According to TimesofIndia.com, ICC officials are unlikely to heed PCB’s demand and have made their stance clear.

The incident unfolded when captain Suryakumar Yadav and his Indian teammates declined the traditional handshake with Pakistan’s players. The Indian side also closed their dressing room door, preventing the customary exchange of greetings. Pakistan captain Salman Agha and coach Mike Hesson voiced their displeasure. Agha even boycotted the post-match presentation, refusing to speak with Sanjay Manjrekar.

Boycott Could Alter Asia Cup 2025 Scenarios

If Pakistan proceed with the boycott, the Asia Cup 2025 qualification scenarios change drastically. Pakistan would remain on two points from their lone victory against Oman. This would automatically eliminate them from the tournament.

India currently lead Group A with four points after wins against UAE and Pakistan. UAE, who also have two points after their victory over Oman, trail on net run rate. A Pakistan boycott would award UAE a walkover, lifting them to four points and sealing their Super 4s qualification alongside India. Oman, after back-to-back defeats, are already out of the tournament.

Such a situation would ensure India and UAE’s progression from Group A. India, with their two victories, have already secured their place in the Super 4s stage.

A Decisive Clash Still Possible

If Pakistan choose to play, the Asia Cup 2025 scenarios shift again. The Pakistan–UAE fixture would effectively become a knockout game. The winner would advance to the Super 4s with India, while the loser exits the tournament.

The entire situation now depends on the ICC’s response to PCB’s demand over Andy Pycroft. He is currently scheduled to officiate the Pakistan versus UAE clash, which has suddenly turned into the tournament’s most decisive encounter.
