Australia opened their three-match T20I series against South Africa with an 18-run victory on Sunday in Darwin. Tim David’s quickfire 83 and Josh Hazlewood’s three-wicket spell helped the home side take a 1-0 lead.
Ninth straight win in T20Is for Australia
This was Australia’s ninth consecutive T20I victory, their longest winning run in the format. They now sit behind only India and Afghanistan, who have both won 12 in a row. Uganda holds the world record with 17 consecutive wins.
Australia have also enjoyed a dominant run against South Africa in this format, with this win being their sixth in a row against the Proteas.
Tim David rescues hosts from collapse
At one stage, Australia were struggling at 75 for six. David then combined with Ben Dwarshius for a 59-run stand for the seventh wicket. His innings shifted the momentum, pushing Australia’s total to 178.
Hazlewood leads bowling attack
Josh Hazlewood’s accurate spell kept South Africa in check as he took three crucial wickets. Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton tried to fight back for the visitors but fell short. The second T20I will be played on Tuesday at the same venue.
