New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced that Bob Carter will step down as high-performance coach. This ends his remarkable 21-year career with both the men’s and women’s national teams.
“I feel like I’ve lived the dream,” Carter said in an NZC release.”I’ve enjoyed offering support and contributing to players’ and teams’ success. That’s terrific—I’m delighted.”
Bob Carter’s Coaching Journey and Achievements
Born in Norfolk, England, Carter played 60 first-class and 55 List-A matches for Northamptonshire and Canterbury before moving into coaching.
He joined the New Zealand men’s setup in 2004 as assistant coach to John Bracewell. After five years, he returned as assistant coach to Mike Hesson from 2012 to 2014.
In 2019, Carter succeeded Haidee Tiffen as New Zealand Women’s head coach. He led the team in the 2020 T20 World Cup and the 2022 ODI World Cup at home before stepping down.
Impact on New Zealand Men’s and Women’s Teams
Carter highlighted teamwork as key to success.”We’ve created sides greater than the sum of their parts,” he said.”Individual performance is important, but the collective potential creates the magic.”
At 65, Carter will continue in cricket as an independent contractor. He expressed pride in leaving when New Zealand cricket is thriving.
The women’s team won their first T20 World Cup last year. The men’s team also whitewashed India in a historic Test series.
Carter Reflects on Cricket’s Evolution and Domestic Strength
Carter noted the game’s evolution but emphasized fundamentals remain unchanged.”Batting and bowling basics have never really changed,” he said.”Batters play shots we wouldn’t have dreamed of, and bowlers have difficult variations. Yet, the framework is the same as 50 years ago.”
He praised New Zealand’s strong domestic cricket system.”Our domestic cricket is very strong and often under-recognized,” Carter said.”This system helps produce great players for the Black Caps and White Ferns.”
The White Ferns’ recent World Cup win demonstrated the domestic system’s success in bringing through new talent.
NZC Pays Tribute to Bob Carter’s Contributions
Daryl Gibson, NZC’s chief high performance officer, praised Carter’s role:”Bob has been the voice of experience at Lincoln. He’s been involved in much of the success in men’s and women’s cricket over the past decade.””He’s a vital part of the high-performance team supporting New Zealand cricket’s golden period.”
