Jasprit Bumrah will miss the crucial fifth Test against England at The Oval, as per a report by ESPNCricinfo. The BCCI medical team has advised against his participation to manage his back workload and ensure long-term fitness. In his place, Akash Deep has been confirmed to return after recovering from a groin injury.
Bumrah had already bowled a heavy workload in the earlier Tests, especially the Manchester game, where he delivered 33 overs. Though he was expected to be available for only three Tests in the five-match series, there was speculation he might still take the field for the decider. However, the team management chose not to risk further strain, especially with just a three-day gap between matches.
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had recently stated that Bumrah was fit “as per his load” and that the final decision would be taken by the captain, head coach, and physio. But now the choice is clear — Bumrah will rest, and Akash Deep steps up for the big game.
Siraj and Arshdeep Set to Share the New Ball
With Bumrah out, India’s bowling lineup will feature Mohammed Siraj, playing his fifth consecutive Test, and left-armer Arshdeep Singh, who is set to receive his maiden Test cap. Arshdeep will replace Anshul Kamboj, who struggled in previous outings.
Akash Deep had earlier impressed in Edgbaston with a 10-wicket haul and will be keen to replicate that success. Meanwhile, Siraj remains India’s leading pacer in Bumrah’s absence and will carry the responsibility of spearheading the attack.
As India trails 1-2 in the series, the pressure is on the new-look pace attack to deliver at The Oval.
