Australian allrounder Cameron Green has confirmed that he will prioritise Sheffield Shield cricket as preparation for the blockbuster Ashes 2025 series. The 26-year-old, who recently returned from back surgery, said he was delighted to complete the Frank Worrell Trophy “unscathed” and will use domestic red-ball cricket to sharpen his game before facing England.
Green was promoted to Australia’s No.3 spot in the World Test Championship final in June. It was his first Test in 15 months after a long rehabilitation from back surgery. He retained the role for the following three Tests in the West Indies, scoring 52, 46, and 42 on difficult batting pitches.
“I don’t think we’ll be playing on many wickets quite like that (this summer), so I don’t think there’s too many takeaways,” Green said. “It was such a tough wicket, especially for the batters, to try and get out of the series unscathed was a good effort.”
Focus on Batting Role and Ashes Preparation
While Green was “proud to do a role” at No.3, he admitted he is not certain if he will bat there in the Ashes opener in Perth on November 21. Instead, his focus is on building form and fitness in the Sheffield Shield.
“In the past, it’s worked really well when I’ve focused on Shield cricket,” he said. “That potentially might be the way to go, especially with (me) working my way back to bowling, to potentially get a few more overs over a few more days. I think that might be the way we go.”
Bowling Return on Track in Domestic Cricket
Green has been gradually working back into bowling, recently completing a 36-ball spell under the guidance of bowling coach Adam Griffith in Mackay. Selection chair George Bailey earlier suggested the Shield would be the best platform for Green’s bowling return.
“(I’m) going really well,” Green added. “I’m not quite certain on what match (his return to bowling) is, but I’m feeling really good and I’m in a really good spot. It’s just really exciting. It’s been a long road back.”
With Australia scheduled to play India in a limited-overs series before the Ashes, Green appears determined to give priority to Sheffield Shield cricket to ensure he is fully prepared for the high-profile Test battle against England.
