Chris Morris Names Aiden Markram as Hot Pick for SA20 Auction 2025

Former South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris believes Aiden Markram will be one of the biggest attractions at the SA20 Auction 2025. With the auction scheduled for September 9 in Johannesburg, Morris expects a bidding war for the Proteas star.

Morris highlighted that Sunrisers Eastern Cape released Markram but still hold the right-to-match card. “Sunrisers haven’t retained him, but they do have a right-to-match card, meaning they can match the final bid for him and retain his services,” Morris told SA20.

Why Markram Will Be in High Demand

According to Morris, Markram’s leadership and batting ability make him a prime target. He pointed out that other franchises could bid aggressively to raise his price, testing Sunrisers’ resolve to bring him back.

“Two teams stand out to me: MI Cape Town, which would solve their captaincy question, and Pretoria Capitals, who have one of the largest remaining purses. Both need a strong local leader, and Markram fits that role perfectly,” Morris added.

SA20 Auction 2025: Bigger and Better

The SA20 has quickly grown into one of the most competitive T20 leagues globally. Last year’s auction saw nearly 600 players register, and this year features retained stars such as Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Jos Buttler, and Jonny Bairstow.

Each franchise retained or pre-signed six players, with a mix of South African and overseas stars. Teams secured wildcard signings ahead of the auction and now hold USD 7.4 million to spend on the remaining 84 slots.

The SA20 Auction 2025 is set for September 9, and the new season begins on December 26. With Aiden Markram available, a bidding war will set the tone. It promises another thrilling edition of South Africa premier T20 league.
