New Zealand have strengthened their coaching staff ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 by appointing former Black Caps all-rounder Craig McMillan as the White Ferns’ full-time assistant coach. The 48-year-old previously worked with the side in a part-time capacity, including during their Women’s T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE last year.
McMillan will now oversee batting and fielding duties under head coach Ben Sawyer. His new role begins immediately, offering the White Ferns stability and experience as they prepare for the October–November tournament in India.
McMillan Excited About Full-Time Role
McMillan admitted leaving media work and other coaching commitments was a tough call, but the opportunity proved irresistible.
“I’m over the moon to be in this role with the White Ferns,” said McMillan. “The women’s game is going from strength to strength, and I’m excited to continue to work with our talented players and help them reach their goals. The last year has gone so quickly and I’ve loved every minute of being part of a team that continues to improve, challenge one another, and does special things on the world stage.”
Preparations for India 2025
The White Ferns staged a training camp in Chennai last month to get accustomed to spin-friendly Indian conditions. McMillan stressed that preparation is crucial as New Zealand aim for their first 50-over World Cup crown since 2000.
“It’s been a busy period leading into the 50-over World Cup,” McMillan added. “We’ve had a number of camps, including one in Chennai which exposed the players to Indian conditions like what they’ll face in October-November. The team is pumped to get back to India and take on another World Cup.”
Tournament Outlook
The White Ferns will begin their campaign against defending champions Australia on 1 October in Indore. The upcoming World Cup features eight teams and offers a record prize fund of US$13.88 million, a huge increase from the US$3.5 million awarded in 2022.
With McMillan now fully on board, New Zealand hope his expertise will help the White Ferns end a 25-year wait for another World Cup triumph.
