Shubman Gill has emerged as the standout performer for India in their ongoing Test series against England. His brilliant batting in both the Birmingham win and Manchester draw has not only kept India in the contest but also earned high praise from former cricketers. Sanjay Manjrekar, speaking after the fourth Test, said that while India missed the presence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, their actual run contributions were not missed.
Manjrekar pointed out that Kohli averaged just 30 over the last five years in Tests, while Rohit averaged around 10 in his last two series. In contrast, Gill has already scored 722 runs in the series, just 16 short of Joe Root‘s record of 737 in the 2021 India-England series. His performance has placed him among the top Indian batters ever in England.
Jonathan Trott, Manjrekar Hail Gill’s Record-Breaking Run
Former England batter Jonathan Trott praised Gill’s resilience and leadership in the absence of India’s senior players. He admitted that England wouldn’t have managed such a fightback had they lost players like Root and others. He described the mood in the Indian camp as confident and focused ahead of the series finale at The Oval.
Manjrekar doubled down on his point, saying that while losing senior names like Kohli, Rohit, and R Ashwin mattered in terms of experience, their recent form hadn’t been match-defining. “It was a loss of presence, not performance,” he explained, highlighting the changing of the guard in Indian cricket.
With one final match to go in London, all eyes are on Gill to possibly break the all-time India-England series record and carry the team to a memorable finish.
