Gill’s Time-Wasting Remark Ignites On-Air Clash Between Karthik and Hussain

Gill’s Time-Wasting Remark Ignites On-Air Clash Between Karthik and Hussain

The tension between India and England took a cheeky twist on Day 1 of the fourth Test in Manchester, when Shubman Gill’s “90 seconds late” remark resurfaced in the commentary box. England legend Nasser Hussain couldn’t resist laughing at Gill’s accusation that England openers arrived late to avoid facing an extra over during the Lord’s Test. However, Dinesh Karthik wasn’t having it and delivered a composed but pointed reply.

In a Sky Sports broadcast segment, Hussain mocked Gill’s press conference statement, calling it laughable since “every team delays play at times.” But Karthik quickly clarified that the issue wasn’t about typical time-wasting tactics. According to him, Gill’s frustration stemmed from the fact that England’s openers were not just delaying — they were late to the crease, which crossed a line.

Karthik Defends Gill, Clarifies What Bothered India

During commentary, Karthik explained that Gill had no issue with tactical pauses like calling for physios or delaying the over. The concern was about England batters Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett arriving at the crease 90 seconds after the break had ended — a move Gill felt was against the spirit of the game.

Shubman Gill had earlier said, “If you get hit on your body, the physios are allowed to come on, and that is fair. But to come 90 seconds late to the crease is not in the spirit of the game.” He acknowledged that every team looks to shorten play when it benefits them, but stressed the importance of playing within the game’s spirit.

The exchange between Karthik and Hussain has added spice to the already intense India-England Test series, now level on drama both on and off the field.
