ICC Reviews Suryakumar Yadav After PCB Complaint

ICC Reviews Suryakumar Yadav After PCB Complaint

India captain Suryakumar Yadav is under scrutiny by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after comments he made following India’s Asia Cup win against Pakistan on September 14 prompted a formal complaint by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Match referee Richie Richardson confirmed he has received two official reports from the PCB and reviewed the evidence. According to the reports, Suryakumar’s remarks were considered potentially harmful to the image of cricket.

Richardson stated that a charge may be brought against Suryakumar, and the captain will have the option to either accept the charge or attend a formal hearing. The hearing would include the ICC match referee, representatives from the BCCI and PCB, and Suryakumar himself.

Post-Match Comments Spark Controversy

After India’s seven-wicket victory, Suryakumar had dedicated the win to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and expressed solidarity with the Indian armed forces. During the post-match presentation, he said, “Perfect occasion, taking the time out, we stand by the families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. We express our solidarity… Want to dedicate the win to all our armed forces who showed a lot of bravery.”

At the press conference, he clarified that India had followed BCCI and government instructions by avoiding post-match handshakes with the Pakistan team. “Our government and BCCI, we were aligned today… We came here to just play the game,” he added.

The PCB has claimed these remarks politicised the sport and violated the ICC’s code of conduct regarding neutrality. The development escalates tensions between the two boards, as India had previously filed complaints against Pakistani players for misconduct. A decision from the ICC is expected soon, which may have disciplinary implications for the Indian captain.
