Karsan Ghavri Slams Sachin Tendulkar Over Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Renaming

Former India all-rounder Karsan Ghavri has strongly criticised Sachin Tendulkar for not “putting his foot down” against renaming the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Ghavri called the change a “degrading” act towards Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s cricketing legacy. Officials implemented it for the July-August Test series, which ended 2-2.

“That is very wrong. Number one, cricket fans always know the AustraliaWest Indies series as the Frank Worrell Trophy. They also refer to the India-Australia Trophy as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If its name changed, Gavaskar poore India ko hila ke rakh dega (Gavaskar will shake the whole of India),” Ghavri told Vicky Lalwani on the latter’s YouTube channel.

Ghavri held the BCCI responsible for not challenging the decision. He questioned why the board stayed silent when Pataudi’s name was removed.
“The BCCI should’ve put its foot down with the MCC and the ECB. Tiger’s name shouldn’t have been removed,” said Ghavri.

Ghavri Criticises Tendulkar’s Response

While Tendulkar initially objected, Ghavri expressed disappointment that the cricket legend did not take a firmer stand.
“In the same context, when officials proposed naming the trophy after Sachin Tendulkar and Anderson, Sachin should have refused outright. Objecting is different,” said the former all-rounder.

“In the first place, you should’ve put your foot down and should’ve said ‘No, I don’t want to use my name because Tiger Pataudi’s name is already there. He’s a legend of Indian cricket. If you want to give medals, use our name. Trophy’s name should remain the same’.”

He added, “First of all, no one should have raised this question.” You’re degrading somebody of a great stature.”

The first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy delivered thrilling cricket. Shubman Gill, captaining his first series, scored 754 runs in five Tests. Mohammed Siraj led the pace attack with 23 wickets in nine innings.
