KL Rahul’s remarkable consistency in the England Test series has sparked comparisons to Joe Root and Steve Smith.
Despite Shubman Gill scoring the most runs in the five-Test series, Moeen Ali highlighted KL Rahul’s unmatched impact. Rahul’s technique, shot selection, and temperament stood out, especially in the absence of India senior batters.
Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, Moeen said, “KL Rahul contribution was the best I’ve ever seen him play in years.”
Rahul scored two centuries—at Leeds and Lord’s—bringing his tally to 10 Test hundreds. His Lord’s hundred made him the first Indian opener with multiple Test tons at the iconic venue.
Moeen added, “Shubman Gill was outstanding, but KL Rahul’s role defined India’s top-order strength this series.”
Adil Rashid echoed similar praise. “Rahul was tight in defence, fluent in attack—his game looked completely in order,” said Rashid.
The series saw a total of 7,187 runs—second only to the 1993 Ashes. India’s 3,809-run haul was their second-highest in any Test series. With 21 centuries scored across five matches, it was a batting-heavy contest.
Moeen concluded, “You had Shubman’s strokeplay, KL’s class, Root’s composure—it was top-quality Test cricket throughout.”
As Rahul’s performances gain global recognition, many now see him in the league of modern greats like Root and Smith.
