Sanjay Manjrekar has advised India head coach Gautam Gambhir to stay relaxed during press conferences, especially when responding to criticism surrounding Shubman Gill. After India’s fourth Test against England, Gambhir defended Gill fiercely when asked about doubts over his captaincy and red-ball form. His sharp tone drew attention, with Manjrekar later suggesting that Gambhir should develop the ability to handle tough questions more lightly.
In the press conference, Gambhir had firmly stated that no one in the team doubted Gill’s abilities, and that anyone who did “doesn’t know cricket.” The coach emphasized that even if Gill hadn’t performed, no one within the team would have blamed him. According to Gambhir, the young captain is living up to his expectations and handling captaincy without pressure.
Gill, who faced criticism before the series, has silenced his doubters with over 700 runs across the Tests, showcasing maturity and leadership.
Manjrekar Suggests a Chill Approach to Questions
Speaking on JioHotstar, Manjrekar pointed out that while Gambhir’s passion for backing Gill is understandable, some questions seem to get under his skin. He clarified that concerns about Gill were not baseless and that cricket experts, too, had valid reasons to question whether he was ready for the leadership role.
Manjrekar reminded Gambhir that critics and team management all want the same outcome—success for Indian cricket. “We’re all part of the same industry and the same country,” he said, urging Gambhir to take a more collaborative and open-minded approach.
He ended with a tongue-in-cheek comment: “I just want him to take a chill pill and take it easy. It would be great to see Gambhir encourage tough questions in the future.”
As India heads into the final Test at The Oval, all eyes remain on Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir’s leadership, both on the field and in the media room.
