The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 was officially cancelled on July 20 due to public backlash following the Pahalgam terror attack. The match, scheduled at Edgbaston, Birmingham, was called off after several former Indian cricketers withdrew and fans expressed strong opposition to the fixture. However, Pakistan Champions will continue to participate in the tournament as per the original schedule.
Kamil Khan, the owner of the Pakistan Champions team, confirmed that the tournament will proceed without any changes. He also addressed concerns about the knockout stages, stating that if India and Pakistan both qualify for the semi-finals, the fixture will be avoided.
India-Pakistan Semi-final to Be Avoided, Final Outcome Undecided
Speaking to GeoNews, Kamil Khan said, “All the remaining matches are taking place. The tournament is going on as per schedule, and there are no changes.” He added, “If we make it to the semifinals, there will be four teams, and we will avoid matches between the two teams.”
He also mentioned that a final between India and Pakistan is still a possibility, but any decisions regarding such a scenario will be made if both teams reach the final, which is scheduled for August 2, 2025.
Earlier, notable Indian players including Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, and Shikhar Dhawan withdrew from the match against Pakistan. Dhawan stated that he had informed the organisers about his decision back on May 11.
Due to multiple player withdrawals and the growing social media uproar, the organisers cancelled the fixture. They clarified in an official statement that the match was scheduled based on the understanding that Pakistan’s hockey team would be touring India, signaling normalcy in bilateral sporting events.
Pakistan to Receive Two Points After India Match Cancelled
Kamil Khan also stated that Pakistan Champions will be awarded two points following the match cancellation. “The two points will be awarded to us, and we deserve those points as per the rules,” he said.
The WCL 2025 began last week with Pakistan Champions playing the opening match against England Champions. The tournament continues with full participation from all other teams.
In the inaugural season of WCL, India Champions defeated Pakistan in the final. With both teams still in contention this year, fans may yet see another thrilling chapter in this high-voltage rivalry—unless politics once again takes center stage.
