Pakistan’s warning to quit the Asia Cup 2025 over the Andy Pycroft issue has placed the board in a tough spot. If the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) pulls out, it could forfeit between USD 12 and 16 million. The Asia Cup remains one of the biggest financial drivers for the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and missing out would heavily affect Pakistan’s yearly income.
Revenue at Stake
The ACC divides 15 percent of its revenue among each of the five Test-playing members: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The earnings come from broadcast rights, sponsorship, and ticket sales. For PCB, this tournament alone is estimated to bring in more than USD 12 million.
Sony Pictures Network India had earlier signed an eight-year broadcast deal worth USD 170 million, which also covers the women’s and U-19 Asia Cups. Any disruption caused by Pakistan’s withdrawal would hit broadcasters and sponsors hard, especially during high-value matches featuring India and Pakistan.
Naqvi’s Balancing Act
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and head of the ACC, has strongly criticized Pycroft after the post-match handshake controversy with India. Still, the ICC has dismissed Pakistan’s appeal to drop him as match referee.
A PCB insider told PTI, “Can Naqvi risk Pakistan losing around USD 16 million out of a projected budget of USD 227 million for the fiscal year? That will be roughly seven per cent of the annual PCB revenue gone. It will be walking on thin ice for him. But again as one of the important ministers of Pakistan, he also needs to keep his respect in front of his countrymen.”
Wider Implications
Walking away could weaken Pakistan’s influence inside the ACC and risk its annual share for skipping a flagship event. Broadcasters, who sell ad slots at premium rates for India-Pakistan clashes, may also challenge the deal.
According to reports, Andy Pycroft may not officiate in Pakistan’s next match against the UAE, with Richie Richardson set to take charge. Yet, Pakistan faces more financial loss than political gain if it chooses to withdraw.
