Ravichandran Ashwin in Talks to Join Big Bash League After IPL Retirement

Ravichandran Ashwin could soon feature in the Big Bash League (BBL) after announcing his retirement from the IPL. The veteran Indian off-spinner is reportedly in discussions with Cricket Australia (CA) to play in the upcoming season of Australia’s premier T20 competition.

According to Cricbuzz, CA CEO Todd Greenberg approached Ashwin shortly after his IPL retirement. The 38-year-old had hinted at exploring opportunities in global T20 leagues. If confirmed, he would become the first high-profile Indian cricketer to play in the Big Bash League.

Greenberg confirmed the talks and expressed excitement over Ashwin’s potential signing.

“To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer,” Greenberg told Cricbuzz

How Cricket Australia Plans to Include Ashwin

CA is exploring ways to integrate Ashwin into the tournament. Most franchises have already spent their salary cap in the draft. A per-match contract, similar to David Warner’s past arrangement, is one possible solution.

Speculation links Ashwin with a Melbourne franchise, though nothing is finalized. His presence could boost the BBL’s popularity, especially in South Asia. The league has struggled in recent years to attract global stars, and an Indian cricketer of Ashwin’s stature would be a major draw.

Ashwin’s Retirement and IPL Legacy

Ashwin retired from the Indian Premier League after a 16-year career across several teams. He confirmed his decision through a heartfelt social media post.

“They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin posted on X.
“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me.”

The spinner also ended his international career in December 2024 during India’s tour of Australia. He retired as India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker with 537 wickets, only behind Anil Kumble’s 619.

In the IPL, Ashwin played 221 matches, taking 187 wickets with best figures of 4/34. He also scored 833 runs, including a fifty. His career featured stints with CSK, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

Ashwin played a crucial role in Chennai Super Kings’ title wins in 2010 and 2011. His final IPL appearance also came in the yellow jersey in 2025 after rejoining CSK.

If finalized, his participation in the Big Bash League would mark the start of his freelance cricket journey. Fans across India and Australia now wait eagerly for official confirmation.
