Rishabh Pant Injury Update: Ponting Says ‘Doesn’t Look Good’

Rishabh Pant’s injury on Day 1 of the Manchester Test has sparked major concern for Team India. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, speaking on Sky Sports, admitted he is deeply worried about the left-hander’s condition after watching the painful incident unfold. Pant was batting on 37 when a reverse sweep attempt off Chris Woakes led to an inside edge that smashed into his right toe.

Immediately after the blow, Pant collapsed in pain and couldn’t put weight on his foot. Medical staff rushed in, and he was eventually taken off the field in a cart. He also visited the hospital for scans. As of now, his participation in the remainder of the Test—and possibly the series—looks uncertain.

Ponting, who has closely worked with Pant at Delhi Capitals in the IPL, said, “He hardly put his foot on the ground. The immediate swelling is what worried me. I’ve had a metatarsal injury myself, and those bones are fragile. If it’s broken, he’s out. If not, India will try everything to get him back.”

Pant’s Absence Could Hurt India’s Chances

At stumps on Day 1, India were 264/4, with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at the crease. While Thakur showed resilience, Ponting emphasized that India will miss Pant’s ability to accelerate and shift momentum.

“Pant brings that X-factor. He can change the course of the game in a session. If he’s out for good, it’s a massive dent not just for this match but for the entire series,” Ponting said.

The BCCI later confirmed Pant had undergone scans and is under medical observation. Fans and teammates alike are hoping for a quick recovery, as the series hangs in balance with India counting on their star wicketkeeper-batter.
