India’s Day 2 at the Manchester Test was highlighted by the extraordinary grit of Rishabh Pant, who came out to bat despite a fractured foot. After being retired hurt on Day 1 due to an injury sustained while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, many assumed his series was over. However, the wicketkeeper-batter returned to the crease on Day 2, astonishing everyone with a courageous 54 off 75 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes.
Shardul Thakur, whose dismissal brought Pant to the middle, lauded his teammate’s commitment and pain tolerance. Speaking after the day’s play, Shardul revealed that getting Pant back onto the field was always part of the team’s plan, with the medical staff working hard behind the scenes. He noted that Pant’s knock added crucial runs to India’s total of 358 in the first innings.
“He was in a lot of pain. We’ve seen him do incredible things before, and this was just another one. The passion and grit he showed was amazing,” said Shardul.
Behind-the-Scenes: Pant’s Struggle and Determination
Pant didn’t travel with the team to the stadium on the morning of Day 2, raising doubts about his availability. Shardul shared that he had to physically check whether Pant could even walk before considering his return to bat.
“When we were warming up, he wasn’t there. I had to touch his foot to see if he could walk. That’s how unsure we all were,” said Shardul.
Later, the Indian team and spectators were surprised when Pant walked out to bat. Despite limping and visibly in discomfort, he delivered a gutsy performance that helped stabilize India’s innings.
Shardul confirmed that Pant’s injury is indeed a fracture, saying, “The news is already out, there is a fracture. It’s not something that can be doubted.”
Pant’s effort was compared to legendary moments in cricket history, including Graeme Smith’s innings for South Africa with a fractured hand. His fearless batting and dedication have once again proven why he remains one of India’s most spirited cricketers.
