Shubman Gill Criticized Over Ball Switch at Lord’s

Shubman Gill came under scrutiny after a ball change during the Lord’s Test between India and England raised eyebrows. On Day 2, the second new ball was replaced after just 63 deliveries when it failed the ring test. Although technically allowed, the timing and decision sparked debate, especially since India’s bowlers were dominating.

Jasprit Bumrah had just picked up quick wickets, removing key players like Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes in a fiery spell. At that point, India seemed firmly in control. But once the ball was changed, the momentum shifted. England’s Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse took charge and built a strong partnership, both scoring fifties and pushing the team’s total.

Nasser Hussain Calls Decision ‘Bizarre’

Former England captain Nasser Hussain questioned why India would push for a change when the old ball was working in their favor. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said, “It was one of the most bizarre decisions I’ve seen. The ball was doing everything. Bumrah was on fire. Why would you change it?”

Hussain added that the Dukes ball has been known for its inconsistency, but when one behaves well, teams should hold onto it. He pointed out that even Mohammed Siraj seemed unhappy with the replacement ball and was seen talking to the umpire about its performance.

Adding to the controversy, the replacement ball also lost shape after just 48 more deliveries. It had to be changed again, further highlighting the issue with the ball’s quality in this series.

By the end of Day 2, England had scored 387 in their first innings. Bumrah finished with a five-wicket haul, while Joe Root reached his 37th Test century. India responded with 145/3, with KL Rahul unbeaten on 53 and Rishabh Pant on 19. The Test remains evenly poised, but the ball change debate continues to be a major talking point.
