Shubman Gill Likely to Miss Asia Cup Squad

Shubman Gill Likely to Miss Asia Cup Squad

Ajit Agarkar and the All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee are set to pick the Asia Cup squad on Tuesday, August 19. Suryakumar Yadav has cleared his fitness test and will lead India in the eight-team tournament starting September 9. The major question for selectors is whether Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal will be included, as both are among India’s top talents.

Reports suggest that the selectors may make a bold decision and leave Gill and Jaiswal out of the Asia Cup squad. The core T20I group that performed well under head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to be retained. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal could instead be rested for upcoming red-ball assignments, including the first Test against West Indies starting October 2.

Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma Set to Benefit

Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma are likely to earn call-ups to the Asia Cup squad. Iyer recently led Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, while Jitesh impressed with his big-hitting for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who claimed their maiden IPL title.

Selectors are keen on including an experienced middle-order batter for UAE conditions, which makes Shreyas Iyer a key candidate. If Iyer is picked, one player between Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh may have to be dropped. India’s first match is scheduled for September 10 against the UAE, with Group A also including Pakistan and Oman.
