Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s T20I vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025, beginning September 9 in the UAE. The announcement was made by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, who took Gill’s name first while revealing the squad.
Agarkar also added the word vice-captain after Gill’s name, highlighting his role before moving on to the other 14 members. The press conference, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, opened with a question about Gill’s comeback as vice-captain.
Selection Debate and Gambhir’s Role
According to The Indian Express, Gill’s appointment came after long deliberation. Selectors considered Axar Patel but chose Gill for the long term. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who joined the meeting virtually, supported investing in a young leader to shape India’s future captaincy.
Agarkar confirmed Gill’s importance in the setup.
“He was the vice-captain when we played in Sri Lanka. But after that, he was busy with Test cricket,” Agarkar said. “We obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign when there’s so much pressure as captain.”
Gill’s Absence and Return to T20Is
Gill has not played a T20I since July last year. He missed the South Africa series due to Test preparations and the England series due to a back spasm. Selectors believe he would have continued as vice-captain had he been available.
Suryakumar Yadav welcomed Gill’s return.
“Gill was always part of the first-choice Indian T20 side,” Suryakumar said. “He missed out due to other commitments and injuries, but the leadership group has always believed in his potential.”
Grooming a Future Leader
With Suryakumar approaching his 35th birthday, selectors wanted to prepare a young leader for the future. At 25, Gill, who already captains India’s Test team, was seen as the most suitable candidate.
The Asia Cup 2025 runs from September 9 to 28 in the UAE, and Gill is expected to feature in India’s playing XI.
