Mohammed Siraj reached a major career milestone on Day 2 of the fifth Test at The Oval by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 201 international wickets. His impactful four-wicket spell helped India dismiss England for 247, just after they were bowled out for 224 themselves. Siraj now has 203 international wickets, marking a proud moment in his Test career as India clawed back into the match.
Siraj Equals Waqar Younis’ Four-Fer Record in England
Siraj’s scalps included Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jamie Smith. With this performance, his Test tally rose to 118, along with 71 ODI wickets and 14 T20I wickets. He now stands above Tendulkar, who retired with 201 wickets across formats.
It was also Siraj’s sixth four-wicket haul in England, making him the most successful Indian in this regard on English soil, ahead of Jasprit Bumrah. The only other Asian pacer to reach that mark in England was Pakistan’s Waqar Younis, who finished with 45 wickets in the country.
India Hit Back After England’s Fiery Start at The Oval
India’s first innings ended with a modest total of 224, despite a fighting 57 from Karun Nair and a 26-run contribution from Washington Sundar. The pair stitched a crucial 50-run partnership for the seventh wicket. England’s pace duo, Gus Atkinson (5/33) and Josh Tongue (3/57), did most of the damage.
In reply, Zak Crawley (64) and Ben Duckett (43) launched an aggressive assault, adding 92 runs quickly. But the momentum shifted after Prasidh Krishna (4/62) broke through. Along with Siraj (4/83), he sparked a collapse. Despite Harry Brook’s 53, England were bowled out for 247 — a slender 23-run lead.
Jaiswal Fifty Leads India to Early Second Innings Advantage
India’s second innings started confidently, ending Day 2 at 75/2. Yashasvi Jaiswal stood tall with an unbeaten 51, supported by night-watchman Akash Deep, who was not out on 4. The visitors now lead by 52 runs and look poised for a crucial Day 3.
