The ICC has reported South Africa’s off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen for a suspect bowling action during his ODI debut against Australia. The 31-year-old featured in South Africa’s 98-run win in Cairns, where he dismissed Travis Head early and recorded figures of 1-46 in his 10 overs.
ICC Raises Concerns Over Bowling Action
Match officials expressed concern about Subrayen’s bowling action, with the ICC highlighting 12 specific deliveries for review. He will now face independent testing at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane following the conclusion of the ODI series.
“He’s available to play until he gets tested,” South Africa coach Shukri Conrad clarified. “We just felt, together with ‘Subs’ that less noise, get him away and out of the public eye (and) just make sure that he’s ok. That’s why his name’s not going to be on the team sheet tomorrow.”
Subrayen to Miss Remainder of ODI Series
Although still eligible, the Proteas will sit him out for the rest of the series to avoid distractions. The squad is set to travel to the United Kingdom for their next white-ball assignment against England.
Subrayen has faced similar challenges before. In 2012, Cricket South Africa placed him under rehabilitation after two tests confirmed his action was illegal. Cleared in 2013, he was again reported twice in the following years, only resuming after clearance in 2016.
“He’s obviously gone through this process before, many years ago,” Conrad said. “But it’s never easy and he’s waited this long to make his debut. We (will) obviously rally around him and make sure that he’s in the best space … he’s going ok.”
Other Incidents in the Match
Australia’s Adam Zampa was handed one demerit point for using inappropriate language, caught by the stump microphone. Zampa admitted the breach, and no formal hearing was required.
South Africa still celebrated Keshav Maharaj’s rise to No.1 in ICC ODI bowling rankings, thanks to his five-wicket haul in Queensland.
Upcoming Fixtures
Australia and South Africa face off again on Friday, August 22, at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, before the series finale on Sunday, August 24 at the same venue.
