Former India cricketer WV Raman has taken a firm stand ahead of the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval. In a recent interview, Raman criticized England captain Ben Stokes for his behavior during the closing moments of the drawn Manchester Test and praised India’s fighting spirit. As the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy sits at 2-1, India now has a strong chance to level the series 2-2.
Raman praised the performances of Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and KL Rahul, who helped India escape defeat with a memorable draw. However, much of the post-match focus shifted to Stokes, who grew visibly frustrated when Sundar and Jadeja refused his offer to call off the game before both secured their centuries.
“Why are you even surprised? English cricketers always whine and whinge when things don’t go their way,” Raman said. He added that if Jadeja scored a century off Harry Brook, it’s because he had already played out all of England’s frontline bowlers. “He didn’t score a hundred against Brook, he scored a hundred against England,” he emphasized.
Raman’s Key Suggestions for India Ahead of Final Test
Looking forward to the series decider, Raman suggested that Washington Sundar should bat higher up the order. He recalled Sundar’s history as a top-order batter and believes the team should explore batting him at a higher position to maximize his potential.
He also weighed in on the potential inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI, citing England’s dry pitches and Kuldeep’s impressive average of four wickets per Test. “It makes sense to bring in a wicket-taking spinner if one of the fast bowlers is under-bowled,” Raman said, while also acknowledging the balance challenges of adding a third spinner.
Regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s availability, Raman urged caution. “You don’t want him breaking down again. It depends on what his body can take,” he warned.
On Anshul Kamboj’s debut, Raman defended the young bowler, saying he was unfortunate to debut on a flat pitch. He felt that even if Kamboj is dropped temporarily, it doesn’t reflect poorly on him and that the management must do what’s best to secure a win.
As India gears up for the must-win Test at The Oval, Raman’s views provide clarity on team strategies, player selection, and the importance of not getting distracted by England’s on-field antics. A draw in the series would be a major achievement for this young Indian squad.
