Right then, what an opening day we have had in The Hundred, 2025. Two cracking London Derbies, both of which were won by the reigning champions. This is just the start of what is going to be almost a month's carnival of cricketing action. Next up, the caravan moves to Old Trafford in Manchester for the 2nd game of the competition. Manchester Originals will be taking on Southern Brave in another double-header on Wednesday, 6th August. The Women's clash will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), followed by the Men's clash at 11 pm IST (5.30 pm GMT). However, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Cheers!
Rashid Khan is adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his impressive match-winning spell. He expresses his delight at starting the tournament with a win, saying it always feels good to begin well as a team. Reflecting on the break he had after the IPL, he feels it came at the right time, allowing him to reset, prepare for the next challenge, and reflect on how best he could contribute. Speaking about the conditions, he mentions that the surface offered help to the bowlers, with some grip on offer, but the key was to stick to the right line and length. Acknowledges that while experience plays a role, being mentally ready is just as crucial, and that preparation comes with time and maturity. Despite not having bowled much before the tournament, he feels confident about his rhythm, crediting his experience for helping him find his lines quickly.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Kane Williamson opted to bat first as he and David Warner both made their debut for London Spirit. However, it soon turned into a nightmare as Jordan Clark and Jason Behrendorff picked up a couple of quick wickets and the Spirit started feeling the pressure. Warner barely got any strike in the Powerplay and he got out as well, even before Rashid Khan started weaving his magic. Rashid picked up 3 wickets as Sam Curran had fun using the slower deliveries and he too ended up with 3 wickets. Ashton Turner was the only Spirit batter who found some timing out there but they kept losing wickets in a heap and didn't even get close to the three-figure mark.
London Spirit are missing a few of the English players and it showed in their batting. A new-look side that hasn't played much cricket together and the likes of Kane Williamson and David Warner have a challenging job on their hands to turn things around. With the ball, Luke Wood and Daniel Worrall started off decently but it was Liam Dawson who continued his stellar form in 2025 and picked up a couple of wickets whilst remaining highly economical. The Spirit managed to pick up a couple of more wickets but the runs were quickly wiped off towards the end.
With 81 runs to get in 100 balls, it seemed like a cake walk but the Invincibles' openers didn't show much intent. Tawanda Muyeye timed the ball well but couldn't find the gaps, whereas Will Jacks seemed out of touch as he made 24 runs off 24 balls. Even the batters that came in after the openers couldn't kick on but a few boundaries from Sam Curran and a mighty six from Donovan Ferreira finished things off with 31 balls to spare.
Reigning champions, Oval Invincibles, open their account with a win in the London Derby and while it might look like a straightforward one, it wasn't always smooth sailing in the chase for Sam Billings and his side. As for London Spirit, they simply didn't have any runs to defend and even after bowling well, they've been well beaten.

SIX! WHACKED! HUGE STRIKE! GAME, SET, AND MATCH! On a good length and around off, Donovan Ferreira makes a deep base for himself, clears out his front leg away and thumps it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie to seal the deal in style. Oval Invincibles have started their campaign with a win in their first match, beating the London Spirit by 6 wickets with 31 balls to spare.

Full and outside off, Donovan Ferreira shuffles across and swings hard on it again. Doesn't get the timing right and the ball goes off the inner half of the bat to mid on. Denies the single.

FOUR! Easy pickings! On a length but down leg, Sam Billings gets inside the line and gets some bat on it. The ball goes off the inside edge and races away to beat the diving keeper to his left for a boundary to fine leg.

Another hard-hitting shot! Full and around off, Donovan Ferreira comes forward and drives it towards cover, where the fielder fails to collect it. The ball rolls away towards mid off and they take a single more. Oval Invincibles need 12 runs more now.

A low full toss, around off, Donovan drills it back to the bowler.
Donovan Ferreira is the new batter in.
OUT! BOWLED'EM! Another one bites the dust and Oval Invincibles lose another wicket in a bid to finish things off quickly. A bit more round-arm from Ashton Turner, bowled from around the stumps and fired in at the stumps. Sam Curran looks to slog it across the line but the ball stays low and skids through past the bat to crash into the stump.
