Pujara Supports Jadeja After Lord’s Backlash

Cheteshwar Pujara has come out in strong support of Ravindra Jadeja after several cricket legends criticized Jadeja’s slow batting during India’s loss at Lord’s. Despite remaining unbeaten on 61 off 181 balls, Jadeja came under fire from former greats like Anil Kumble, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Sourav Ganguly, who believed he should have played more aggressively—especially against spinner Shoaib Bashir.

India lost the third Test against England by 22 runs, failing to chase a target of 193. Jadeja was left stranded as wickets kept falling around him. Speaking to the Indian Express, Pujara said Jadeja had no option but to play the way he did due to the slow pitch and soft ball. “He couldn’t have scored faster on that track. It was difficult to find boundaries. I thought he was batting really well,” Pujara said.

He explained that Jadeja likely wanted to get as close as possible before taking risks, especially while batting with tailenders. Jadeja often retained strike late in the over to protect Bumrah and Siraj. Pujara felt this showed smart game awareness rather than lack of intent.

Jadeja’s Growth as a Batter Praised by Pujara

Pujara also praised Jadeja’s growth over the last five years, especially in overseas conditions. “He works hard and continues practicing even on match days. His ability to play pace has improved a lot,” said Pujara.

Earlier known for his skills against spin, Jadeja now handles seamers confidently too. Pujara, who has played alongside him in domestic cricket for Saurashtra, said Jadeja once struggled to convert starts at the international level but has now overcome that.

“You don’t score 300 in first-class cricket without skills. He always had the talent. Now he’s converting that at the highest level,” he added.

As India prepares for the fourth Test trailing 2-1 in the series, Jadeja’s fight at Lord’s stands as a rare bright spot. According to Pujara, it deserves praise, not criticism.
