Adam Zampa – Australia’s Premier Leg Spinner and Match-Winner
Adam Zampa is a key figure in Australia’s modern limited-overs cricket setup. Born on 31 March 1992, he is a leg-spinner known for his sharp variations and tactical awareness. Zampa was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning squads in 2021 (T20) and 2023 (ODI), and he holds the record as the highest wicket-taker for Australia in T20 Internationals.
Youth and Early Development
Zampa initially bowled medium pace as a child. However, due to restrictions on pace bowlers in under-14 matches in Australia, he switched to leg-spin, inspired by the legendary Shane Warne. His transition paid off when he was selected for Australia’s under-19 team in 2009.
He played in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, where Australia emerged victorious. Across youth Tests and ODIs, Zampa took 11 wickets, proving his potential at an early age. His impressive performances earned him a rookie contract with New South Wales in 2010.
Domestic Career
New South Wales (2010–2013)
Zampa struggled to get regular opportunities in New South Wales due to the presence of senior spinners like Nathan Hauritz, Steve O’Keefe, and Steve Smith. Nevertheless, he made his first-class debut in the 2012–13 Sheffield Shield season and impressed with five wickets against Queensland.
Though he joined the Big Bash League late in the season, Zampa played for the Sydney Thunder in BBL|02 and took ten wickets in three first-class matches at an average of 23.
South Australia (2013–2016)
To find more game time, Zampa moved to South Australia. The switch allowed him to learn from experienced spinner Johan Botha and provided consistent playing opportunities. He impressed in the 2014–15 Matador BBQs One-Day Cup with a 4/18 performance and signed a contract extension with the Redbacks.
In the 2015–16 season, Zampa switched his BBL team to Melbourne Stars and had a breakthrough season. He starred in both List A and T20 formats, including taking 4/48 to push South Australia into the elimination final of the One-Day Cup. His unique run-out of Peter Nevill with his nose became a viral moment.
International Career
Debut and Early Impact (2016–2019)
Adam Zampa made his ODI debut for Australia on 6 February 2016 against New Zealand and his T20I debut on 4 March 2016 against South Africa. He became an instant asset in both formats, quickly establishing himself in the national squad.
In the 2016 T20 World Cup, Zampa was Australia’s leading wicket-taker with five wickets. A standout performance came against Bangladesh where he took 3/23. Despite his success, he was surprisingly dropped for a match against Sri Lanka later in 2016. After public criticism of the decision, he was recalled and won Player of the Match with figures of 3/25.
Zampa delivered one of the best-ever IPL spells with figures of 6/19 while playing for Rising Pune Supergiant, becoming the third-best bowler in IPL history at the time.
He was part of the 2017 Champions Trophy squad and continued to be a regular feature in Australia’s white-ball squads.
Career Milestones (2020–2023)
In March 2022, Zampa reached 100 ODI wickets during a match against Pakistan. Later in September, he took his first ODI five-wicket haul with 5/35 against New Zealand.
However, he had a low point during the 2023 ODI series against South Africa, conceding 113 runs in a match, equalling the then-record for most runs conceded in an ODI.
2023 World Cup Glory
Zampa bounced back strongly in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. As the only specialist spinner in the squad, he delivered consistently, taking 23 wickets across 11 matches. This made him the highest wicket-taker by an Australian spinner at a World Cup and tied the all-time spinner record with Muttiah Muralitharan.
Key performances included:
- 4/47 vs Sri Lanka (man of the match)
- 4/53 vs Pakistan
- 3/21 vs England, along with a crucial catch and a quickfire 29 runs off 19 balls
Zampa played a crucial all-round role, earning multiple Player of the Match awards and helping Australia win the trophy.
2024 T20 World Cup and Historic T20I Milestone
In May 2024, Zampa was named in Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup. On 11 June 2024, he became the first Australian bowler to take 100 wickets in T20 Internationals by dismissing Bernard Scholtz of Namibia.
