By the end of 2017, Markram had already scored two Test centuries in his first three matches. In February 2018, at just 23, he captained South Africa’s ODI side during India’s tour. He became the second youngest South African to captain an ODI team, just after Graeme Smith.
Markram hit his career-best 152 against Australia in March 2018. Although he initially struggled on spinning pitches during tours to Asia, he bounced back with a strong performance in Pakistan in 2021, scoring a crucial century and finishing as the series’ top scorer.
Leadership and ICC Events
In March 2023, Aiden Markram was officially appointed T20I captain of South Africa. Under his leadership, South Africa reached the final of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, a first for the team. Though they lost to India in the final, his calm captaincy earned praise.
During the 2023 ODI World Cup, Markram smashed the fastest century in World Cup history (at that time) in just 49 balls against Sri Lanka. He ended the tournament as a key contributor in South Africa’s run to the semi-finals.
In 2025, Markram played a match-winning knock in the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia and was awarded Player of the Match, helping South Africa clinch their first-ever WTC title.
T20 Franchise Career
Markram has also had a successful T20 franchise career. He began with Northerns in 2014 and gradually made his mark across the globe.
