India’s Journey Through the Decades
Early History (1700s–1932)
Cricket in India began during British rule. The first match was played in 1721. Slowly, Indian communities like the Parsis adopted the game. In 1932, India played its first official Test match against England.
Test Cricket Era (1932–1970)
India joined the ICC in 1926 and played their debut Test in 1932. The team struggled initially but recorded its first Test win in 1952. Over time, legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Bishan Bedi, and EAS Prasanna laid the foundation.
Rise in One-Day Cricket (1971–1999)
India played its first ODI in 1974. Although slow starters, their moment of glory came in 1983 when Kapil Dev led India to its first World Cup win. The 90s saw the rise of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Anil Kumble.
Golden Era Begins (2000–2013)
Under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy, India found confidence. Then, MS Dhoni took over and guided India to:
This made Dhoni the first captain to win all three major ICC tournaments.

-
India topped Test rankings
-
