Shubman Gill Biography: The Rise of India’s Modern Batting Maestro

Shubman Gill (born 8 September 1999) is a right-handed top-order batter who represents the Indian cricket team across all formats. Known for his elegance, composure, and textbook technique, Gill is widely considered one of the brightest young talents in world cricket. He plays domestic cricket for Punjab and captains the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gill was a vital part of the Indian Under-19 team that won the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament. Since making his international debut in 2019, he has steadily established himself as a dependable opener.

As of July 2025, Shubman Gill has scored 21 centuries across international and IPL cricket:

  • 8 Test centuries

  • 8 ODI centuries

  • 1 T20I century

  • 4 IPL centuries

Early Life and Family

Shubman Gill was born in Fazilka, Punjab. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, a farmer and cricket enthusiast, noticed his son’s talent early and built a cricket ground on their farm for him to practice. Shubman’s dedication from a young age was intense; his family later moved to Mohali to help him train at the Punjab Cricket Association.

Youth and Domestic Career

Gill made headlines in 2014 during the Vijay Merchant Trophy (U16) where he scored over 750 runs in five matches. He made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy and scored a half-century in his debut match. In his second game, he scored 129 runs.

In the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup, Gill scored 372 runs in five matches, including a match-winning 102 in the semi-final against Pakistan. He was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

International Career

ODI Debut & Progress

Gill made his ODI debut for India against New Zealand in January 2019. After intermittent opportunities, he established himself in 2022–2023. His maiden ODI century came against Zimbabwe in 2022. He followed it with a double century (208) against New Zealand in 2023, becoming the youngest to do so in ODIs.

Test Career

Gill debuted in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in December 2020. His fluent 91 at the Gabba played a key role in India’s historic win. As of July 2025, Gill has scored 8 centuries in Tests, including a career-best 210.

T20I Journey

Gill scored his maiden T20I century against New Zealand in 2023, an unbeaten 126—the highest by an Indian in T20Is at the time.

IPL Career

Shubman Gill was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 IPL auction. He played several impactful knocks and matured into a reliable top-order player. In 2022, he was signed by the Gujarat Titans for ₹8 crore and helped them win the IPL title in their debut season.

In IPL 2023, Gill scored 890 runs and won the Orange Cap. He scored 3 centuries in that season alone. In 2024, he was appointed as the Gujarat Titans’ captain and added another century to his name, bringing his IPL century tally to 4.
