Suryakumar Yadav: India’s Mr. 360 and T20I Trailblazer
Suryakumar Ashok Yadav, often dubbed as India’s “Mr. 360”, is a modern-day T20 phenomenon. A right-handed middle-order batter with a flair for unorthodox strokeplay, he has reshaped India’s T20 narrative with fearless cricket. Born on 14 September 1990, he now leads the Indian T20I side and boasts multiple ICC accolades, making him a cornerstone of India’s limited-overs setup.
Early Life and Background
Born in Mumbai to parents originally from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, Suryakumar began playing cricket in Varanasi under the guidance of his uncle. He later moved back to Mumbai, training under coach Ashok Kamat at BARC and honing his game at Elf Vengsarkar Academy. A commerce graduate from Pillai College, he balanced academics with intense cricket training.
In 2016, he married Devisha Shetty, a trained dancer he met during his college years.
Domestic Career
Yadav made his List A, T20, and first-class debuts in 2010 for Mumbai. His breakout Ranji season came in 2011–12 with 754 runs. He led Mumbai in parts of 2014–15 and again in 2019–20, contributing with crucial runs. In 2015–16, he was instrumental in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy triumph and maintained consistent performances in domestic List A and T20 tournaments.
He also impressed in club cricket, notably with Parsi Gymkhana, and earned accolades such as the MA Chidambaram Trophy for Best Under-22 Cricketer.
IPL Career
After a quiet start with Mumbai Indians in 2012, Yadav moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and was part of their title-winning squad. He returned to Mumbai in 2018 and became a key player, winning two more IPL titles in 2019 and 2020. In 2023, he scored 605 runs, including his maiden IPL century. In 2024, he hit his second IPL ton despite battling injuries.
International Debut and Rise
Suryakumar debuted in T20Is in March 2021, instantly making headlines by hitting a six on his first international ball. His ODI debut came in July 2021 against Sri Lanka, where he also scored his maiden ODI fifty. He was named in multiple World Cup squads and gradually cemented his place in India’s T20I lineup.
Dominance in T20Is
From 2022 to 2024, Yadav was India’s T20I standout. He scored four T20I centuries, including match-winning tons against England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. He reached No. 1 in the ICC T20I rankings and remained there for over 18 months. His performances in the 2022 and 2023 T20 World Cups, including key knocks and electric fielding, won him global admiration.
He was also awarded ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year in both 2022 and 2023.
Test Debut and ODI Challenges
Though Suryakumar made his Test debut in February 2023, he remains primarily a limited-overs specialist. His ODI form has been inconsistent, including a streak of golden ducks. Nevertheless, he remains in contention due to his overall skillset and match-finishing ability.
Captaincy Journey
He was first appointed T20I captain in November 2023 after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format. Under his leadership, India won a T20 series against Australia and the 2024 T20 World Cup. His reappointment in July 2024 reflects the board’s long-term vision for him as a leader.
Playing Style
Yadav’s aggressive approach, wide range of shots, and ability to innovate under pressure have earned him the nickname “Mr. 360”, akin to AB de Villiers. He is known for his scoops, reverse sweeps, and inside-out lofted shots, making him one of the toughest batters to bowl to in T20 cricket.
