Tim David has ruled out an immediate return to the ODI format despite the recent retirements of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. With Cricket Australia looking to reshape their squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup, selectors see potential in David. However, the 29-year-old all-rounder clarified that a comeback to the 50-over format isn’t in his current plans.
Known for his explosive performances in T20 cricket, David has extended his contract with Hobart Hurricanes for two more Big Bash League seasons. Despite this, he does not hold a domestic contract in Australia and hasn’t featured regularly in 50-over cricket. His last ODI appearance came in 2023, and he hasn’t played a domestic one-day match since 2021.
Busy T20 Schedule and Injury Recovery Take Priority
David cited a packed T20I calendar and ongoing hamstring rehabilitation as reasons for not considering a return to ODIs. He is currently recovering in Perth after suffering an injury during the IPL, which sidelined him from Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s playoff matches. He was expected to return in the Global Super League, but his recovery has taken longer than planned.
He is now preparing for Australia’s upcoming T20I tour of the West Indies, starting July 20 in Jamaica. David is also expected to participate in a series of T20 matches against South Africa, New Zealand, and India leading up to the T20 World Cup. Due to scheduling conflicts, he will skip The Hundred but is likely to return for the CPL with St Lucia Kings.
Focus on T20 World Cup and Long-Term T20 Commitments
Since debuting in 2022, David has become a core part of Australia’s T20I squad, with over 50 appearances. His focus remains on maintaining form and fitness for the upcoming T20 World Cup. While he hasn’t ruled out future ODI possibilities entirely, his current attention is on short-format cricket.
With a long stretch of T20Is ahead and his continued recovery, Tim David remains one of Australia’s most valuable limited-overs assets, but for now, his ODI comeback remains off the table.Tools
