St Kitts and Nevis Patriots beat Guyana Amazon Warriors by 5 runs

Right then, the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots live to fight another day with this hard-fought win, while the Guyana Amazon Warriors slip in a game which they will feel they should have closed. That’s all from this clash in Guyana. After a short break, CPL 2025 returns with the 26th match, where the Guyana Amazon Warriors will meet the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at the Guyana National Stadium on Thursday, September 11. The action begins at 4.30 am IST (11 pm GMT, previous day). Do join us an hour earlier for all the pre-match chatter. Until then, take care! CIAO!
The skipper of the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Jason Holder, says that it was a really tight game and admits they’ve had a few close calls this season. Stresses the importance of showing composure to finally get over the line. Praises his bowlers for an outstanding effort in defending what he felt was a challenging total on this surface. Explains that he focused on understanding the match-ups and mixing things up, with spinners playing a key role in the win. Highlights Ashmead Nedd’s control both inside and outside the Powerplay, Waqar Salamkheil’s brilliance, and Navin Bidaisee’s impressive contribution.
The skipper of the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Imran Tahir, says that it was a disappointing performance from his side. Feels that 150 was definitely a chaseable total, especially with conditions favouring batting, and credits Mohammad Rizwan for showing how to anchor an innings. Admits that the opposition looked a bit hungrier on the night and deserved the win. Explains that it wasn’t easy for spinners to bowl, though he tried to squeeze in as many overs as possible. Reflecting on his team’s struggles, he points out that losing wickets up front has been a recurring issue throughout the competition, and it’s an area they need to improve.
Mohammad Rizwan is adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his impressive match-winning knock of 85 runs. He believes that they were 10 runs short, considering the dew. Credits the bowlers for the way they bowled and executing their plans. Adds that it was all about the bowlers tonight. Reckons that on these pitches, you cannot always go hard, and it is more about building the innings. Says that he always tries to do what the team needs from him.
Time for the Post-Match Presentations...
Earlier in the match, after winning the toss and opting to bowl first, the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ bowlers proved their captain Imran Tahir's decision right by striking early. Gudakesh Motie, Hassan Khan and Romario Shepherd wreaked havoc, taking three quick wickets inside the Powerplay, leaving the Patriots in a spot of bother. Despite the flurry of wickets, Mohammad Rizwan stood firm at the other end and held the innings together with a couple of crucial partnerships, first with Rilee Rossouw and then with Navin Bidaisee. Hassan Khan’s 2/21 was the standout for the Warriors, but despite that, the Patriots managed to reach 149/6, thanks to Rizwan’s sheer class.
The Patriots’ bowlers deserve all the credit for this win. Waqar Salamkheil’s variations brought two big breakthroughs. Naseem Shah’s pace rattled the middle order, and skipper Jason Holder got a big wicket of Romario Shepherd in the penultimate over, though he ended up conceding three boundaries in that over. Even the likes of Nedd and Drakes chipped in with key scalps. It was a collective effort, each bowler stepping up when needed, and ultimately, their discipline in the final overs sealed the result.
The chase began cautiously, with Ben McDermott and Moeen Ali scratching around for timing. Still, they managed to lift the score to 34 in five overs before Waqar Salamkheil and Ashmead Nedd struck in successive overs to remove both openers. At 47/2, the game tilted in the Patriots’ favour at the end of the seventh over, and soon Shimron Hetmyer’s early exit worsened the situation. Shai Hope tried to hold things together with his composite 31, but his dismissal to Navin Bidaisee was the turning point. Hassan Khan, Dwaine Pretorius, and Romario Shepherd all tried to counterpunch, but wickets kept falling at crucial junctures. Quentin Sampson found 2 boundaries in his first three balls, but the target just slipped out of reach in the final over.
NAIL-BITING FINISH and a game that swung back and forth right till the very last ball - that’s what the Caribbean Premier League have served up so far in this 2025 season. The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, who had only 149 on the board, somehow held their nerves in the closing stages to snatch a five-run win against the Guyana Amazon Warriors. Chasing 150, the Warriors kept themselves alive until the final over, needing 11 runs, but Naseem Shah bowled with ice in his veins to close out the contest. For the Patriots, it is a lifeline win that keeps their campaign alive, while the Warriors are left heartbroken in front of their home fans.

Naseem Shah has done it for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots! A searing yorker, tailing in at the toes from over the wicket. The yorker is so good that there is not much Quentin Sampson can do about it. Gets his bat down and jams it out onto the strip. Relief in the Patriots' camp as they keep their slender playoff hopes alive with this hard-fought win!

Naseem nails the yorker, right at the toes, Quentin Sampson hurriedly gets his bat down in time and squeezes it out to the left of long on. Jason Holder charges to his left but Sampson is quick enough to complete the second run and keep the strike. The third umpire is called in to check for a short run at the bowling end but Sampson had grounded his bat before returning. 6 needed off the final ball!

An invaluable dot! Naseem Shah takes pace off and goes into the surface, over off, Quentin Sampson swings hard to go big on the leg side but fails to connect. 8 needed off 2 for Guyana!

Naseem Shah goes for the yorker, but it turns out as a low full toss, on middle, Quentin Sampson gets his hands through the ball and firms the drive back past the bowler. The long off fielder sprints to his right but cannot prevent Quentin from returning for the second run.

Naseem bends his back and digs it in short, on middle, Gudakesh Motie swings across for the pull and hits it away to deep backward square leg for a single. 10 required off 4 for Guyana!
Gudakesh Motie walks in next to bat.
OUT! TAKEN! An ideal start to the final over for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots! Naseem Shah hurls it on a length, outside off, Keemo Paul gets low and looks to go downtown. Fails to properly get under the ball. Hits it flat and straight down the throat of long on, where Jason Holder gets his body behind the ball and takes it at waist height.

WOW! The young Quentin Sampson has thumped two boundaries in his first three balls and has given his team an edge going into the final over. The Warriors need 11 runs off the final six deliveries, and they are very much favourable to get over the line, considering the momentum. But the Patriots have kept the pendulum swinging till now with timely wickets, and they would like to chip in more to defend 10 runs to silence this Guyana crowd. Let's see what happens. Naseem Shah has been handed over to bowl these final six balls with Keemo Paul on strike.
